Why Summer Is Actually the Best Time for Firepits at a Scottish Wedding
There's a common misconception about firepits and outdoor fires that they're strictly an autumn or winter thing. A way to take the edge off the cold. A cosy afterthought for when the temperature drops.
But here in Scotland, summer tells a very different story and if you're planning a wedding or celebration between June and August, a firepit might just be the most transformative element you add to your evening.
Scottish Summer Evenings Were Made for This
Scotland in summer is genuinely magical. The light lingers until 10, 11, sometimes almost midnight in June and July. The sky does things you simply don't see anywhere else soft golds fading into dusky purples, the landscape holding onto the warmth of the day long after the sun has technically set.
That kind of evening deserves to be celebrated outdoors. And a beautifully placed firepit gives your guests the perfect reason to stay outside, gather together, and let the night unfold at its own pace.
Rather than retreating indoors when the reception formally ends, your guests linger. Conversations deepen. The dancing winds down but the evening doesn't. A glowing fire creates what no venue lighting rig ever quite can: a natural, effortless focal point that draws people together.
The Temperature Sweet Spot
Scottish summer evenings are warm enough to be comfortable outside, but there's almost always a gentle chill in the air as midnight approaches especially in open countryside, coastal settings, or elevated estate grounds.
That's actually ideal firepit weather. Your guests aren't huddled for warmth in the way they might be in October, but the fire still feels inviting and atmospheric rather than unnecessary. It adds ambience without overwhelming. It creates the kind of glow that looks incredible in photographs and feels even better in person.
We recently supplied firepits for a beautiful wedding at the Brig O'Doon Hotel in Ayrshire a venue that already has romance woven into its very foundations, sitting beside the Brig O'Doon bridge that inspired Robert Burns. On a warm May evening, with the river nearby and the fire glowing, guests gathered outside well into the night. It was, by all accounts, exactly the kind of evening people talk about for years.
Creating Quiet Moments in the Middle of the Celebration
One of the things we hear most from couples after their wedding day is how fast everything moves. You spend years planning every detail, and then suddenly it's over in what feels like hours.
A firepit changes that, even briefly. It creates a natural pause. A place to step away from the noise and just be together for a moment.
One of our favourite moments the kind that reminds us why we do this is when a bride and groom slip away from the celebrations to sit quietly by the fire. No speeches, no formalities, no well meaning relatives. Just the two of them, the warmth of the flames, and a few minutes that belong entirely to them.
It's something we're very much looking forward to as we head into a two-day wedding at Thirlestane Castle in Berwickshire this summer, where we'll be bringing our Whisky firepit alongside our Ultimate Experiences package for 150 guests. A castle estate surrounded by the Scottish Borders landscape, with long summer evenings and fire glowing across the grounds — it doesn't get much more atmospheric than that.
The Practical Bit (That Isn't Actually Very Practical-Sounding)
Summer weddings often have more outdoor space in play marquees with open sides, walled gardens, terraces, sweeping lawns. All of these work beautifully with firepit hire, giving your guests a natural flow between spaces throughout the evening.
Our team handles everything from delivery and placement to safety setup and collection, so there's nothing for you or your wedding planner to manage on the day. We simply make sure it's perfect, and then we let the fire do the rest.
